As much as post-stroke rehabilitation focuses on the patient, it is also critical to keep in mind those who are being the caregivers of the stroke patient and their own health.
Being a caregiver is not only a full-time job at home but it also takes a lot of mental and physical strength out of themselves too. What can they do to remain healthy as caregivers?
One of the most important things to stay a healthy caregiver is knowing your limits. Having to provide care on a 24/7 basis, you need to think about how well you can handle everything.
To avoid overstressing and overloading yourself, here are some tips you should apply to improve your situation.
Create a support network
Don’t think that you have to be the sole carer for the patient. Speak to family members, close friends, and see who can help give some care and provide extra support for yourself and the patient.
Chat with medical experts
Being thrust into a carer’s role often means you may not know all the skills you might need. In that case, speak to some experts such as doctors or therapists to find out what you can do to improve the way you care for your loved one.
Eat and sleep well
Keeping your mind and body is important too. It means you need to ensure that you always eat regular meals and take enough rest to keep up your energy levels. This will be beneficial to both yourself and whoever you are caring for.
As important as caregiving is, you always need to find time to take a break from everything as there will be moments where stress levels will be raised.
The breaks don’t have to be long, as little as 10 minutes or retiring for a couple of hours can make a world of difference. Having another family member taking care of him/her will also give the patient a much-needed boost too!
During your downtime, make sure that you relax and channel all the stress out of your body whether it be a relaxing meal, a nice massage, reading a book, watching TV or simply gazing as the world goes by.
When you have had your break, you will feel refreshed and ready to get back on top of things with a clear mind.
By doing this, you are preserving your own energy and avoiding unnecessary burnout.
Take care of yourself to better take care of yours loved ones!
