Predicting Cognitive Decline After Stroke: New Tools for Early Risk Identification

How can we predict which stroke patients are most at risk for cognitive decline?
This study suggests two scoring models to estimate which subjects are most likely to develop cognitive impairments such as difficulties with memory, attention, or planning, six months after an ischemic stroke.
Both models identified five important predictors:
• Older age
• Female sex
• Elevated LDL cholesterol
• Infarction in a brain region important for cognition
• Moderate-to-severe global cortical atrophy on brain imaging
